SELF: Laverne Cox on her Relationship to Her Body

Actress and activist Laverne Cox opened up about learning to love her body in this intimate interview series, Body Stories. The episode reveals why Laverne needed to transition for people to see her spirit, the ways her body stores past traumas and how she’s using therapy to work through them. The video accompanied her digital cover story from October 2018 about self-acceptance and her Trans Is Beautiful campaign.

Leading with Sensitivity

The greatest challenge in doing this interview was telling a story that aligned with this series while avoiding asking questions that would pressure any answers in regard to a medical transition. I have covered the LGBTQ+ community for many years and I wanted to ask the right questions so that Laverne felt safe to be vulnerable. I chose to focus on her connection to her body and how she’s learned to love herself through the process of transitioning.
